Editorial Policy & Methodology

How we source, validate, review and correct clinical content · Last updated: 26 October 2026

1. Author and medical reviewer

All clinical content and calculators on Neonatology App are written and medically reviewed by Dr. Mahmoud M. Ahmed, Consultant Neonatologist. See the Scientific Review Committee.

2. Source hierarchy

When choosing the evidence behind a tool, we use sources in this order:

  • National and international guidelines first: e.g. AAP, NICE, ESPGHAN, ESC and the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS).
  • Peer-reviewed primary studies: the original papers that derived or validated a formula, score or reference range.
  • Standard textbooks are used only when no guideline or primary study is available.

Every calculator shows a References box listing the sources used by its logic. DOI and PubMed (PMID) links are checked to make sure they resolve to the correct paper. Where no verifiable link exists (e.g. textbooks or institutional handbooks), the source is cited without a link and marked as such.

3. Calculator validation

Formulas and thresholds are checked against published worked examples and the original source tables before release. For example, the neonatal early-onset sepsis calculator (Kaiser Permanente model) was matched against 13 reference cases from the official calculator.

Where a source is weak, approximate or missing (for example approximate Fenton reference values, unsourced PICC length formulas, or drug ranges taken from a secondary formulary copy), a visible caution is shown on the tool itself.

4. Review cycle

Each calculator is reviewed at least every 12 months, and sooner when a relevant guideline is updated or a problem is reported. The last-review date is shown on each page, in the References box.

5. Corrections

If you find an error, please email [email protected] with the page URL, the inputs you used, the expected result and the result you saw. Please do not include patient names or other identifiers.

Reported errors are reviewed and corrected promptly, and the page's review date is updated when a correction is made.

6. Medical disclaimer

Neonatology App is intended for healthcare professionals. Its tools support, and do not replace, clinical judgment or local protocols. Verify every dose, threshold and interpretation before acting on it. See the full Medical Disclaimer.

7. Advertising and independence

The site is free to use and supported by advertising. Advertisers have no influence on clinical content, and no clinical content is sponsored. No conflicts of interest are declared.
